Tropical Adventures offers two different types of medical / travel insurance to our volunteers. The first kind is our Basic Coverage, which we offer free as part of all our volunteer packages. The second, more Comprehensive Plan, is available for an extra charge.
Basic Coverage
Tropical Adventures offers insurance at no extra charge to our volunteers as part of our basic package. Additional coverage is available for $25 per week for those seeking coverage in Costa Rica before or after their volunteer time.

Your coverage (in USD) includes up to:
Accidental Death
$25,000
Permanent Disability (accident)
$25,000
Repatriation (flying your remains home)
$2,500
Medical Coverage accident or sickness
$2,500*

In order for us to secure your insurance, we need the following information from you:
  • Full Name
  • Birthday and age
  • Passport number
  • Nationality
  • Name of your beneficiary and their relationship to you
  • The exact dates of arrival and departure from Costa Rica

In the event you need to use the medical coverage part of your insurance for any reason, you need to be aware of the following information:
  1. There is a 10% deductible for your medical coverage ($50 minimum per incident). So for instance if you needed medical attention and the costs came to $750, you would need to pay $75 out of your pocket. If the medical costs came to only $300, you would have to pay $50, because $50 is the minimum amount.
  2. You must notify our Costa Rica office at 868-0296 the same day of the incident (so long as medically possible), as we need to notify the insurance company via phone in order for you to be covered.
  3. Medical coverage is limited to acute care only. No pre-existing conditions will be covered. Your attending physician must write a letter summarizing your visit and (very important) must include in the letter the fact that you were treated for an "infermidad aguda" -- which means "acute illness."
  4. You must provide receipts to your volunteer coordinator within 5 calendar days in order to be reimbursed. This includes: doctor and hospital costs, medications, lab tests, x-rays, ambulance costs and any meals eaten in the hospital.
  5. The maximum age of coverage is 70 years old. If you will be turning 71 during your stay here, you will not receive any coverage.
If you have any questions regarding this coverage, please don't hesitate to contact us for more information.
